Along the Hollinwood Canal - 14
New Link at Hollinwood? |
If the canal were to be restored and linked to the Rochdale Canal, a new route through Hollinwood would be necessary because of building that has taken place. This could become part of any future scheme to regenerate the area and could provide an attractive waterfront for new developments.
The exact route that this link could take through Hollinwood depends on which areas of land are available or become available as part of any future re-development. Ideas shown on this page are just suggestions and future investigations and developments may produce other alternatives.

Whatever route a new canal link might take to cross Manchester Road, the next obstacle is the railway line. However, a possible answer lies with Hudson Street bridge, near Hollinwood Station.
The roadway below the bridge is no longer used so it seems possible for a canal channel to be constructed through this bridge, with a footway alongside.
A new link would have to drop down through a lock to get under Manchester Road, so may be on a suitable level to pass under this bridge.

There are a number of possible routes between the railway and the Rochdale Canal. The Tweedale Way area, being developed as industrial units, is fairly open. This offers the possibility of a canal route alongside the roadway or between the buildings.
Alternatively the canal could descend by another lock into a "cut and cover" tunnel below some of the car parking areas.
It is only around 100 metres from Tweedale Way to the Rochdale Canal, across an area not yet developed, so a choice a routes is possible to fit in with how the land is used. Unless it has passed below this area through a tunnel, a final lock would take the canal link down into the Rochdale Canal somewhere above Lock 65. A footbridge would be needed to carry the Rochdale Canal towpath across the link.
