Along the Hollinwood Canal - 8 Waterhouses Locks, Daisy Nook |
A few metres to the north of Waterhouses Aqueduct is the first lock on the Hollinwood Branch Canal. The lock chamber has been infilled for safety and vegetation is growing around the tail end of the lock, but the structure appears to be intact.
Above the lock is a wide pound which has at one time been used as a model boat pond.
The canal turns sharply to the left and climbs two locks forming a "staircase". This is the only lock staircase on a narrow canal in the area. One lock opened straight into the next, with the middle gate shared by both locks.

The locks have been infilled with water cascading down large steps.
The grassy slope to the right of the locks was the site of a Pump House, built in 1812, that used a James Watt engine to pump water back up the four locks to avoid too much loss of water from the higher level as boats passed through the locks.
