Along the Hollinwood Canal - 1 |
These pages will take you for a virtual walk along the route of the Hollinwood Branch Canal. The photographs will give you a good impression of what the canal route is like. These pages also include walking directions to enable you to walk the canal route yourself, if you should wish.
The walk along the canal begins in Droylsden Town Centre, on the A662, on main bus routes from Ashton and Manchester.
From the traffic lights in the centre of Droylden, walk southwards along Market Street, following the road as it bends to the right. A short distance ahead the road crosses the Ashton Canal. Turn right, along the towpath.

Fairfield Junction, with the green railings marking where the Hollinwood Branch started. The main line turns right.
|
Ahead, where the canal turns left into a lock, there is a wide area of canal to the right. This is Fairfield Junction, the former junction with the Hollinwood Branch, which ran north-eastwards, beyond the metal railings, towards the tall building in the distance.
Continue to the lock and turn right, over the stone bridge. It is interesting to note that this lock was formerly a "double lock", but the offside lock is no longer in use. Downstream of the bridge, on the right, a stone boathouse is seen.
Follow the path across the bridge and turn right where the path divides. Follow this path until it becomes a road (Buckley Street).
|
Pass Franklin Road, then turn right just before the flats. Go straight ahead, through a gap in the wall, then turn right, following the path around the back of the Community Centre.
To the right you can see the railings beyond which is the former canal junction. Continue ahead until you have passed the car park, then turn left, walking along the former line of the canal towards Manchester Road Bridge.

This section of canal may be re-instated between the Ashton Canal and Manchester Road as part of a re-development of the area.
